NS-1 Importance of Obturating Lateral Canals

Program Overview:

The goal of endodontic therapy is to clean and shape the root canal system and to obliterate all existing communications between the root canal and the attachment apparatus. We know that these communications work as “portals of exit” for toxins in the chronic phase and bacteria in the acute phase. For this reason, the lesions of endodontic origin can be found everywhere around a root, where a “portal of exit” does exist. It is obvious, therefore, that during our treatment we need to take care of all the foramina that can be at the apex, in a biforcation or on the “lateral” aspect of a root. Bacteria don’t make any difference if they live in the main canal or in a lateral canal. It is also important to remember that taking care of lateral canals doesn’t require any effort from the operator. The irrigating solutions will digest all the organic material inside, and the warm gutta-percha vertically compacted will automatically fill all of them when they are present.

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:

  •  Discuss the current scientific status on the subject, addressing the limitations and outcomes related to different assessment methods.
  •  Indicate the methodological reasons that led to the current lack of reliable conclusions on the relationship between dentinal defects and endodontic procedures.
  •  Relate how further advances of the methodological approaches would progress toward determining the mechanism of crack formation associated with root canal treatment
