OSC-11 Will Genetics and Personalized Medicine have an Impact on Endodontics

Course Description:

In a March 2016 editorial, JADA Editor Dr. Michael Glick suggested that “…the inference of an association between genetic mutations and clinical outcomes is a concern that all oral health care professionals (OHCPs) one day need to address. Furthermore, OHCPs will also need to understand and interpret the relevance of the ever-increasing research and literature in the field of genetics and genomics.”
The integration of individual genetic assessments into healthcare decisions has been described as “personalized” or “precision” medicine. But, just how precise is it? What types of genetic studies are clinically relevant? In what ways is precision medicine affecting medical care today? Do these applications extend to endodontics in terms of individual variation in pain perception, apical periodontitis, inflammation and tissue regeneration? Attending this seminar will give a “practitioner friendly” review of these questions, with insight into what is happening today and what will happen tomorrow.

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the development of genetics applied to healthcare.
  • Describe the concept of personalized or precision healthcare.
  • Recognize the areas of precision healthcare that may affect endodontic practice.
