Course Description:

Endodontic surgery is a highly successful procedure given the appropriate case selection and the use of modern microsurgical techniques and armamentarium. Using an evidence-based approach, this presentation will detail all steps of modern endodontic microsurgery as needed by the clinician, including presurgical and intra-operative hemostasis, soft tissue management, osteotomy, root-end resection and preparation, root-end filling with bioceramic filling materials, as well as wound closure and postoperative care. Special attention will be given to surgery in the aesthetic zone, the management of the sinus and the mental nerve. All case scenarios will be highlighted by detailed photographic and video documentation.

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the case selection for endodontic surgery based on a biological rationale and clinical objectives.
  • Describe all clinical steps of endodontic microsurgery as supported by evidence.
  • Identify with the specific challenges that are encountered in different anatomical locations.

Spyros Floratos, D.M.D.

Dr Floratos received his DMD from the University of Thessaloniki School of Dentistry in Greece in 2001. He received a Certificate in Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 2009. Since 2009, he holds an Adjunct Assistant Professor appointment at the Endodontic Department of University of Pennsylvania. He is also an Active Duty Officer in the Greek Navy and Director of the Endodontic Department of the Athens Naval Hospital in Greece. He has presented in endodontic meetings in USA and Europe and has published in national and international endodontic journals.

Paula A. Mendez-Montalvo, D.D.S.

Dr. Paula Mendez earned her D.D.S degree from Javeriana University, School of Dentistry, Colombia and participated as an international exchange student at School of Dentistry UT Health Science Center San Antonio. She completed her first Postgraduate Program in Endodontics in 1995 in Javeriana University. For 12 years in her native country, Dr. Mendez maintained her private practice, she was a clinical associate professor and president of her regional Endodontic Association. Since 1999, she has contributed in teaching Microendodontics and Endodontic Microsurgery internationally. In 2008, she pursued specialty training at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School, where she earned her Certificate of Specialist in Endodontics receiving the highest recognition, the Grossman Award. She has been member of the Distance Learning Committee of the American Association of Endodontics and is currently serving as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She maintains a private practice in Houston,Texas.
