CE Hours: 1.5

Course Description:

There will be a 10-minute ADEA Endodontic Section business meeting followed by the Educator Forum. As educators we understand that communication skills, patient rapport and patient management are critical components of health care. However, methodologies to teach and measure these skills vary widely, yet are required by CODA. This presentation will demonstrate how two virtual patients presenting with dental pain and trauma can be used in your curriculum to support active case-based learning, enhancing students’ diagnostic abilities, clinical management, communication skills and cultural sensitivity. At the counterpoint, is the endodontic treatment, made ever more expedient by advancing technology. However, this begs the question; does the use of advancing technology in endodontic care give the student a false sense of confidence that they are meeting the standards of practice because they employ this technology? The opposing argument to all medical technology is its use by practitioners who have not achieved the foundational understandings and competences to render skilled care. What is our obligation to teach the parameters of care that allow our novice graduates to ask themselves “do I have the competence to render skilled endodontic care is this case?”

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Assess virtual patients as a teaching tool in your curriculum to promote a better understanding of diagnosis and emergency procedures which require an integration of biomedical and clinical science.
  • Identify challenges that educators face when establishing clinical skill awareness for students who do not meet expectations for aptitude or competence.
  • Plan teaching cases within your curriculum that demonstrate the risks and benefits of new technologies and offer the dental student an approach to assess their own skill deficits.
