Course Description:

This presentation will describe an enhanced revision of endodontic regenerative therapy to treat non-vital or previously treated open apex teeth. This incorporates the addition of a bovine collagen-carbonate apatite scaffold to the currently established regenerative endodontic technique. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and two-dimensional radiography were used pre-operatively and at follow-up visits to assess healing. Follow-up findings include resolution of periapical radiolucencies and diffuse radio-opacities in the coronal portions of the canal spaces. The technique of adding a collagen-carbonate apatite scaffold to the existing regenerative endodontic therapy protocol results in substantial hard tissue repair. Case reports will be presented and the technique of placing the collagen-carbonate apatite scaffold will be reviewed. Proper case selection and treatment of regenerative endodontic failures will also be reviewed. New directions in enhancing the regenerative technique will be discussed.

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the history of regenerative endodontic therapy and future directions in research.
  • Describe CBCT interpretation of results relating to the histology of the tissue formed.
  • Describe placement of a bovine collagen-carbonate apatite scaffold within the current regenerative technique.
