Description:

Antibiotics are useful adjunctive tools in the management of endodontic infections. That said, their overuse and misuse in dentistry and medicine have caused a dramatic increase in the rates of antibiotic resistance. The rise in resistance, among other concerns, underscores the need for stewardship of this valuable resource. Participants in this webinar will understand the diagnosis of endodontic infections, but will more importantly appreciate those situations that may benefit from antibiotic therapy as well as those where antibiotics may not be necessary. Evidence-based strategies for prescription will be reviewed, as will antibiotic premedication in dentistry.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Define antibiotic stewardship and discuss its necessity.
  • Review the diagnosis of orofacial infections
  • Discuss indications and contraindications for antibiotic therapy in endodontic infection management, as well as evidence-based antibiotic regimens.
