
EP-4 The Trouble with Cracks

Description: This session will present an interdisciplinary overview of detecting, diagnosing, treating and restoring teeth with fractures and cracks, both large and small. The presenters will review endodontics and restorative evaluation of fracture lines and cracks and discuss how the endodontist and restorative dentist communicate to make the best decisions to present to a patient for long term success of the endodontics/restorative procedures based on current endodontics and restorative EBD.
Learning Objectives:
- Determine the severity of fractures/cracks in teeth and work with their restorative colleagues on managing, restoring or making a decision to extract a tooth based on the patient's clinical presentation.
- Determine the long term prognosis of care rendered.
- Make an evidenced based decision for treatment options and selection of restorative materials and treatments for the best long term results.

Karen Bruggers, DDS, MS
Karen Bruggers, DDS, MS received a BS degree in Microbiology from LSU Baton Rouge, and an AS degree in Dental Laboratory Technology and a DDS from LSU School of Dentistry. She received her MS in Prosthodontics from UNC Dental School. Dr. Bruggers has memberships in the American College of Prosthodontics, where she served for over 15 yearson the ACP Education Foundation board, as secretary, vice-chair, and chair of the ACPEF, the ADA, and the AAFP.
Dr. Bruggers taught dental ceramics at LSUSD prior to attending dental school. She was a full time faculty member at UNC in the department of Prosthodontics for three years. She was in the private practice of Prosthodontics from 1991 to May 2017 in Cary, NC and was an adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at UNC School of Dentistry, teaching in the graduate Prosthodontic program until May 2017. Dr. Bruggers recently retired from LSU Health Dental School where she served as Chair/Department Head of Prosthodontics at LSU School of Dentistry. Dr. Bruggers has lectured throughout the United States.

Robert Roda, D.D.S., M.S.
Dr. Roda graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada in 1981 and maintained a full-time private general practice in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia for ten years. He returned to school at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas Texas, and received his Masters of Science (Oral Biology) and Certificate in Endodontics in 1993. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics in 1998. Dr. Roda has published and lectured internationally, most recently co-authoring the chapter on non-surgical retreatment in the 12th edition of Pathways of the Pulp. He is Past-President of the American Association of Endodontists, Past-President of the Arizona Dental Association, and is an active member the American Dental Association. Dr. Roda is a former Associate Editor of the Journal of Endodontics, and is an Endodontic Consultant to the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners. He maintains a private practice limited to Endodontics in Scottsdale, Arizona.
