Description: Ownership of endodontic practices is evolving.  Who or what owns these practices will drive future directions of our clinical specialty.  Endodontists are expected to be experts in endodontic care, but most of us have no training in the basics of private equity. The speakers on this panel will discuss the pros and cons of different ownership models and contracts associated with them as well as a more basic explanation of how private equity functions.   There will be initial presentations and then brief counter point discussions then an opportunity for audience questions.

Learning Objectives:  

  • Explain the goals, advantages and disadvantages of the private equity industry.
  • List the advantages and disadvantages of private equity ownership of endodontic practices.
  • Discuss important concepts in buy/sell agreements.

Kenneth W. Tittle, D.D.S., M.S.

Dr. Ken W. Tittle maintains a full-time private practice in endodontics with his daughter Mia J Tittle, DDS, MS in Pleasant Hill Calif. He is an assistant professor of endodontics at the Arthur A. Dugoni University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and has lectured to local dental societies, the CDA, the ADA, and The American Association of Endodontists on various aspects of endodontics. His areas of interest are traumatic injuries, resorption, and advanced technologies to diagnose and treat endodontically involved teeth. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, a fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists, a former Director of the American Association of Endodontists and the Contra Costa Dental Society, and is currently Public Policy Advocate for California State Association of Endodontists. His favorite avocations all involve water.

Kevin Kneafsey, PhD

• Joined Wells Fargo in July 2017 as a Senior Investment Strategist in the Multi-Asset Client Solutions team.

• Previously, he was a Senior Adviser with the Multi-Asset Investments team at Schroders and before that he was Head of Research for Blackrock’s Multi-Asset Client Solutions (BMACS) team.

• Kevin joined Wells Fargo Nikko (later Barclays Global Investors BGI) in 1994 and held several senior positions including Chief Strategist, Global Market Strategies Group responsible for Global Ascent, a global macro hedge fund, and active currency mandates. In 2006 Kevin formed a Client Solutions group at BGI which was responsible for liability hedging, optimal beta/risk parity (built and managed the Market Advantage funds) and optimal alpha (managed MuSt, an internal Multi-Strategy hedge fund of funds). While in this role Kevin also became the Head of Research, Client Solutions BlackRock.

• Kevin has a degree in Accounting & Finance from the University of New Mexico and holds a Doctorate in Finance from the University of Arizona. He has taught classes at the University of Arizona and at the University of California Berkeley in the Masters in Financial Engineering Program in the Haas School of Business.

Daryl J. Dudum, D.D.S

A. Lee Maddox, DDS

Dr. Maddox received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Southern California in 1987, his certificate in Endodontics from the University of Southern California in 1989, and his board certification in Endodontics in 1995. Dr. Maddox received his J.D. degree from Whittier College of Law, Costa Mesa, California where he graduated in the top one-third of his class.
Dr. Maddox practiced Endodontics and maintained two offices in Orange County for nine years. During this time, his endodontic practice experienced a 700% increase in production during this nine year period. Dr. Maddox has served as a clinical instructor at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and Loma Linda School of Dentistry. Dr. Maddox has been providing legal services to Dentists for over ten years, helping thousands of doctors with their transition needs as well as general legal services. He has been in the dental transition business as a Practice Broker since 2010. After three successful years as a dental practice broker, Maddox Practice Group was acquired by Henry Schein PPT, the dental practice transition division of Henry Schein Dental, in February, 2013. After over 5 years as Vice-President and Regional Director for the western United States for Henry Schein, Dr. Maddox retired from Henry Schein and has re-opened his law practice. Dr. Maddox now enjoys practicing law full time in Costa Mesa and helping dentists, veterinarians and medical professionals.

Francisco J. Nieves, D.D.S., MDS.

Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Nieves is currently a first year endodontic resident at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. He earned his dental degree from the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston in 2016. He completed his B.S. in Biology at St. Bonaventure University.
