FREE- EP-11 Debunking Root Canal Myths

Program Description:

This session will explore the endodontic misinformation and myths currently being thrust into the spotlight by the media and the internet regarding root canal therapy. Recently, claims have been made linking root canal treatment to breast cancer as well as a host of other diseases. A history of Weston Price's original research will be presented, tracing its trajectory to the present-day personalities that continue to fuel the focal infection debate. A thorough investigation of current, relevant research will be presented. This presentation aims to bring participants up to date on what patients have been exposed to in the media, and to equip practitioners with the evidence-based information supporting a thoughtful and accurate rebuttal to any claims made counter to the fact that endodontic therapy remains a safe and efficacious means of treating teeth with endodontic pathosis. 

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:

• Discuss the history that continues to spark debate over endodontically treated teeth being the cause of various systemic diseases.
• Demonstrate awareness of the challenges being made to endodontic therapy by personalities on the internet and in the media, as well as the misinformation to which patients are being exposed.
• Provide an accurate, evidence-based rebuttal to those questioning the validity of what they see on the internet and hear in the media.
