How to Submit a Successful AAEF Grant Application

Description: The Foundation inspires and supports research and the genesis of new knowledge in endodontics. Through the AAEF Research Grant Program, endodontic residents, dental school faculty researchers and clinicians, have been able to perform numerous studies that have contributed to improved knowledge in the field and ultimately translated findings to better patient care.
The purpose of this webinar is to demystify the process of AAEF research grant submission. Members of the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee will present an overview of the grant submission process, including research priorities, specifics of grant preparation, review criteria, budget development, critical documentation, as well as common questions that grant applicants may have.
At the conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Describe the grant application process
- Develop a grant budget
- Define each component of the grant proposal

Ariadne Letra, D.D.S., M.S., P.h.D.
Dr. Ariadne Letra is a tenured professor of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences and Endodontics, and a member of the Center for Craniofacial and Dental Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Letra’s research focuses on gene discovery and functional genomic characterization approaches to understand the etiology of complex craniofacial and oral traits and conditions such as cleft lip/palate, tooth agenesis, and apical periodontitis. Another aspect of Dr. Letra’s work focuses on identifying host factors contributing to the interconnectedness between oral and systemic health and disease.
Dr. Letra has been the principal investigator for several NIH and AAE foundation grants and has served in various NIH study sections. Her residents have also been recipients of numerous AAE Resident Research grant awards and placed among the top ten winners of the AAE/Dentsply Resident Research Presentation Awards for the last ten years.
Dr. Letra’s work has been recognized through prestigious awards including the 2020 Journal of Endodontics Best Paper in Clinical Research Award. Her work was also featured on the cover of the Journal of Endodontics, Journal of Dental Research, and Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research Journal. Dr. Letra is a recipient of the distinguished 2018 AADR/SCADA Burton C. Borgelt Faculty 160 peer-reviewed articles, 5 book chapters, and numerous abstracts and publications in the media. She is an associate editor of the Journal of Endodontics, and a member of the editorial board of numerous medical and dental journals including the Journal of Dental Research, Journal of Dental Research Clinical and Translational Research, American Journal of Human Genetics, among others.
Dr. Letra is currently Chair of the AAE Research and Scientific Affairs Committee.

Rene Chu, D.D.S., M.Sc.
Dr. Chu graduated with honours from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Dentistry in 2008. He went on to practice as a general dentist before realizing his desire to pursue the Endodontic (root canal) specialty. He attained his Masters and Certificate in Endodontics in 2013. He is the recipient of the prestigious American Association of Endodontists Educator Fellowship. Dr. Chu is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontists and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. He was previously an Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa teaching both predoctoral students and endodontic residents. He has recently returned to the University of Manitoba as an Assistant Professor and Division head of Endodontics. He has been the presenter at numerous CE courses since his specialty degree. He is an active member of numerous National and International organizations. Dr. Chu is currently Chair of the Endodontic Section of the American Dental Education Association, a member of the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee of the AAE, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Journal of Endodontics, and a participant of the National Dental Examining Board of Canada.
Susan Paurazas, DDS, MS, MHSA
Dr. Paurazas is a Clinical Professor and Program Director of the Graduate Endodontic program at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. She is a board certified Endodontist and maintains a specialty practice in New Baltimore, Michigan. Dr. Paurazas is a member of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) where she is currently a DIstrict IV director. She has served on the AAE Regenerative Endodontics and Research and Scientific Affairs Committees and currently serves as Chair of the Educational Affairs committee. Dr. Paurazas is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. Dr. Paurazas is a member of the American Dental Education Association where she serves as Chair elect on the Council of Advanced Education Programs (COAEP). Dr. Paurazas has a Masters degree in Endodontics from the University of Detroit Mercy and a Masters degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan. She is a member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association, Michigan Association of Endodontists, and Macomb Dental Society.
