Description: Behavior guidance techniques, both non-pharmacological and pharmacological, are used to alleviate anxiety, nurture a positive dental attitude, and perform quality dental care safely in children, adolescents, and persons with special health care needs. Selection of techniques must be customized to the needs of the individual patient and the skills of the practitioner. Strategies to effectively implement these behavior guidance techniques, such as communication guidance, tell-show-do, voice control, non-verbal communication, positive reinforcement, distraction, and desensitization will be reviewed. Nitrous oxide inhalation, and advanced behavior guidance techniques such as sedation and general anesthesia will also be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:  

  • Evaluate patient and parental behaviors which my contribute to behavior challenges during endodontic treatment
  • Apply non-pharmacological behavior guidance techniques in endodontic treatment to alleviate anxiety and create a positive interaction with pediatric patients
  • Identify those pediatric patients who require advanced behavior guidance, and how to safely incorporate pharmocological sedation and general anesthesia to their treatment

Julianna Bair, DMD

Dr. Julianna Bair grew up in Livingston, New Jersey and attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry and Spanish Literature. She received her DMD degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. She then went on to complete a general practice residency at Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital and a pediatric dental residency program at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Bair is a board-certified pediatric dentist. As a pediatric specialist, she saw a need for herself to learn more about endodontics. This passion led her to complete her final residency program in endodontics at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. As a dual specialist in an endodontic practice, Dr. Bair treats children and adults, delivering the highest quality care, with that extra gentle touch of a pediatric dentist. In her free time, she enjoys jogging, skiing, traveling the world, and spending time with family and friends. She is also fluent in Mandarin.
