Description: Root canal disinfection is still a challenge among clinicians. Many different disinfection protocols are being proposed with uncertain evidence behind them. Technological advances during the last decade have brought new irrigation solutions and delivery systems for disinfection of the root canal system. This lecture will address the main questions clinicians have and bring evidence-based answers to the most common controversies in endodontic disinfection.

Bettina R. Basrani D.D.S., M.S.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Bettina Basrani is Tenured Associate Professor and Director, MSc Program in Endodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada since 2015. Dr Basrani received her DDS degree from the University of Buenos Aires and a Specialty Diploma in Endodontics and PhD from Maimonides University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A long-time educator and researcher, she began her teaching career at the University of Buenos Aires. In 2000, she moved to Canada to serve as Chair of the Endodontic Program at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 2004, she moved to Toronto, where she has continued her academic and clinical work. Internationally recognized as a leading authority in endodontics and as an excellent lecturer, effectively combining clinical and scientific information, Dr Basrani has received many awards throughout her career, such as the Louis Grossman Award by the French Society of Endodontics and has international courses and lectures, over 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications, three textbooks and several textbook chapters, and abstracts to her credit.

Brett Gilbert, D.D.S.
Dr. Brett E. Gilbert graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School in 2001 (DDS) and 2003 (Certificate in Endodontics). He is currently a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Endodontics at the University of Illinois-Chicago, College of Dentistry. He is a past-president of the Illinois Association of Endodontists. Dr. Gilbert is board certified, a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. He was named a top ten young dental educator in America by the Seattle Study Club in 2017. In 2019 he was named to Academic Keys Who’s Who in Dentistry Higher Education (WWDHE). He serves as the director of intellectual wellness for the Dental Mental Network. He is the founder of Access Endo, a global online education platform devoted to Endodontics and direct mentorship of colleagues. Dr. Gilbert lectures on clinical endodontics and wellness. Dr. Gilbert is a partner in U.S. Endo Partners and has a full-time private practice limited to Endodontics in Niles, Illinois.

Ronald Ordinola-Zapata, DDS, MS, PhD
Dr. Ordinola Zapata obtained his D.D.S. degree in 2001 from Inca Garcilaso de la Vega University in Lima-Peru. After practicing for six years as a general dentist, Dr. Ordinola Zapata continued his career at the Endodontic Department of the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, where he obtained a Master and a Doctoral degree in Endodontics. In 2014, he moved to USA to continue his training. Dr. Ordinola Zapata completed a two-year Advance Education in General Dentistry residency program at Larkin Community Hospital in Miami and his Endodontic residency program at the IB Bender Endodontic Division, Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.
