Course Description: 

The presentation will address the extent of harm of opioid epidemic and addiction in general within the US. The presentation will also review the role of the dental profession in causing this epidemic and explain how the profession can be part of solution going forward.

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the extent of harm of the opioid epidemic in the US.
  • Explain the role of doctors and dentists in the opioid epidemic.
  • Describe post-operative dental pain and an evidence-based approach to its management.

Omar Abubaker, D.MD

Dr. A. Omar Abubaker earned a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree (BDS) from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Alexandria, Alexandria, Egypt in 1975. In 1984 he earned a Ph.D. in Anatomical Sciences and in 1990 earned a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Between 1984 and 1990 he also served as resident and Chief resident in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and one-year research fellowship at the Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh. Dr. Abubaker was joined the faculty of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the School of Dentistry, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in July 1991 with the rank of assistant professor. Since 2002, he has served as the Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Chief of Division of Surgery in the Department of Surgery, VCU School of Medicine . Dr. Abubaker co-authored two textbooks, over 50 chapters and over 40 scientific articles in peer-review journals. He presented before many local, national and international scientific meetings.. Dr. Abubaker recently earned a Graduate Certificate in International Addiction Studies from the International Program in Addiction Studies from a joint program at Virginia Commonwealth University, The University of Adelaide, and Australia and Kings College London, England. He has interest in education and research in the field of addiction. He lectured to local and national groups on addiction, pain management and opioid epidemic. Over the past two years he presented on the topic of substance use disorder, pain management and opioid epidemic to more than 50 local, regional and national groups and organizations.
