
SP-28 Constructing Your Best Case History Portfolio for the ABE Examination

Description: This course is designed for ABE Board eligible candidates and their mentors to assist them in creating a strong portfolio. Examples of good portfolios will be presented. Examples of winning and poor radiographs will be projected. Tips for finding helpful resources via the Internet and where to find the important downloads will be provided. The role of the College of Diplomates and how they can be helpful will also be presented. Knowledge is power and knowing how portfolios are graded will give participants a greater sense of confidence when preparing their portfolio. Participants will also find out the latest Board requirements and actions that affect the examination process.
- Define and describe the five types of cases required for the portfolio.
- Explain what are, and what are not, proper radiographs for inclusion in the portfolio.
- Describe the fading system the Board uses to evaluate portfolios.

Josanne M. O'Dell, D.D.S., M.F.S., J.D
Dr. O'Dell received her Master's degree in Forensic Science from George Washington University. She then completed her dental degree at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. Dr. O'Dell practiced as a general dentist for a short time before earning a specialty certificate in Endodontics from the University of Southern California. She established a solo Endodontic practice in San Juan Capistrano, CA and continued to teach part-time at both USC and UCLA until taking advantage of an opportunity to enter full-time academics. While in practice she attended law school, graduating just prior to entering full-time academics in January 2015. Dr. O'Dell has served on multiple committees at the local state and national level, many of which have focused on ethics, such as the AAE Ethics Committee and local and state dental Peer Review Committees. In addition, she has held positions as the past president of the Southern CA Association of Endodontists, and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics. Dr. O'Dell is currently the interim Program Director of the Advanced Specialty in Endodontics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
