SP-62 Educator Forum: Teaching a Single Standard of Endodontics

CE: 1.5

Course Description:

In 2017, the AAE Executive Board determined that there was so much poor and professionally shameful endodontics in the private sector by non-specialists that our specialty needed to stand up and publish the quality standards in endodontics that we recognize and value in patient care.

A special committee of educator-endodontists wrote a first “White Paper” in 2017, defining the recognized standards in our specialty for endodontic diagnosis, treatment planning and prognosis in endodontic treatment. In 2018, the AAE was determined to publish a second “White Paper” to uphold the principles of best practice and high practice standards in the area of non-surgical treatment.

The AAE Board of Directors has agreed upon a strategy to market excerpts from these papers to various audiences and groups who are our “customers”. These groups range from dental schools, the lay public and other audiences including insurance associations, state dental boards, etc.
Endodontic educators are encouraged to create curricula that emphasize trust and accountability in personal skill and the requirement to refer when that skill is deficient.

The session will begin with a 5-10-minute ADEA Endodontic Section Business Meeting.

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss educational issues and challenges in teaching diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment in endodontics to predoctoral students.
  • Describe the rationale for developing standards for endodontic treatment by the general dentist, and identify potential uses of the recently developed standards in education and practice.
  • Discuss how Canadian educators will address the implementation of the single standard of endodontics.
