Paula Villa, DDS|Dynamic navigation has been used to help us approach difficult scenarios in endodontic microsurgery such as the treatment of lesions that are close to certain anatomical structures in a safe way.

    CE: 1.0

Description: Dynamic navigation has been used to help us approach difficult scenarios in endodontic microsurgery such as the treatment of lesions that are close to certain anatomical structures in a safe way. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

    • Explain how dynamic navigation works
    • Discuss its use in endodontic microsurgery as well as its indications and limitations.

Ronald Lemon, DMD, David Witherspoon, BDS., MS., MFA., FICD |The AAE Position Statement on Vital Pulp Therapy established a new paradigm for the management of cariously exposed vital pulp. The research presented in the Statement supports changes in the diagnosis and treatment of inflamed pulp.

    CE: 2.0

Description: The AAE Position Statement on Vital Pulp Therapy established a new paradigm for the management of cariously exposed vital pulp.  The research presented in the Statement supports changes in the diagnosis and treatment of inflamed pulp.  The AAE should be the leader in dentistry for advancing the adoption of this philosophy of “saving the pulp” as a priority.  In this presentation, the major positions of the Statement will be compared to previous philosophies.  The next stage of acceptance of the philosophy will require not only support from organized dentistry, but, most importantly, from the insurance industry and educational institutions.  Representatives from these critical areas will present pathways for advancement from their perspective.  Incorporation of the Vital Pulp Therapy philosophy into mainstream dental practice will require more than just the dental community.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

    • Explain how the AAE Position Statement differs from traditional philosophies of treatment for cariously exposed pulp.
    • Describe the need for revision of traditional diagnostic terminology for inflamed vital pulp – “reversible vs irreversible”
    • Ackownledge the requirement for adequate reimbursement for Vital Pulp Therapy procedures from insurance companies

Yoshi Terauchi, D.D.S., PhD |This lecture will discuss how to manage non-visible separated instruments, and recommendations to remove those beyond the curve under the DOM.

    CE: 1.0

Description: Instrument separation is very frustrating. Instrument retrieval is even more frustrating and considered more challenging than any other procedure in endodontics because there was no predictable protocol for instrument retrieval. But the recent literature suggested that separated instruments that are visible under a dental operating microscope (DOM) can be predictably removed with ultrasonic tips alone using a single standardized retrieval protocol that minimizes potential variables. Visualization and accessibility to the separated instrument play a major role in successful instrument retrieval.

However, when it comes to the removal of non-visible separated instruments, an instrument retrieval procedure would be completely unpredictable from a lack of visualization. Hence, in the lecture how to manage non-visible separated instruments will be discussed and the best technique will be suggested to make it as predictable as possible to remove those beyond the curve under the DOM. In addition, the standard protocol in combination with CBCT for instrument retrieval will also be shown and discussed.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

    • • Make a predictable treatment plan for non-visible separated instruments
    • • Demonstrate minimally invasive and predictable way to prepare the canal for removal of non-visible separated instruments
    • • Perform the best technique to remove non-visible separated instruments

Stephen P. Niemczyk, DMD |This presentation will provide guidelines for effective implementation of the SOM, incorporating basic ergonomic principles, radiographic and CBCT pretreatment cues, procedure-specific positional variations, and line of sight optimization for surgical procedures.

    CE: 2.0

Description:The incorporation of the Surgical Operating Microscope into the contemporary Endodontic surgical practice has elevated the precision and expanded the scope of the treatments possible because of the increased magnification of the field in concert with brilliant illumination. However, the transition to integration was not always a smooth learning curve. Positioning of the SOM relative to the operative field, while providing adequate and stable retraction, has proven to be a major hurdle. This presentation will provide guidelines for effective implementation of the SOM, incorporating basic ergonomic principles, radiographic and CBCT pretreatment cues, procedure-specific positional variations, and line of sight optimization for surgical procedures. It will also suggest alternative reflection and retraction platform strategies to ease the acquisition and visualization of the surgical field.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

    • Demonstrate proper surgical ergonomics and its influence on performance.
    • Recognize the importance of “Virtual Surgery” in the pre-treatment assessment of access and positioning.
    • Describe the changes in angulation and reflection and their influence on field visualization and “line of sight”.
    • Examine the various means of retraction and their respective applications.
