    Speaker: George Bruder, D.M.D.|The decision to treat or extract a tooth in the esthetic zone is one of the more complex decisions that a practitioner must make. It is a test of the team’s knowledge and ability to reach the ultimate goal of an esthetic and functional restoration that will last for years to come. All this must be done with the patient’s emotional and financial status considered. This session will focus on the latest challenges in diagnosing endodontically treated teeth that may require surgery to assist in dental dam isolation, apical surgery and/or intentional replantation. This will be both a “why to” presentation focusing on the decision-making process and a “how to” presentation.

    Nessrin A. Taha, BDS, GradDipClinDent, DClinDent, PhD

    Dr Taha is professor of Endodontics, former Vice Dean and director of postgraduate clinics at Faculty of Dentistry, Jordan University of Science and Technology. She also Seves as chairman of the scientific and examination committee for Jordan Dental Board Examination in endodontics, and a memer of the ethics committee and institutional review board at king Abdullah University Hospital.
    Dr Taha obtained her speciality in Endodontics and PhD from the University of Melbourne in Australia. She is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of dental Surgeons in both the general stream and the special fields of Endodontics and has been awarded Sutherland Prize for outstanding performance in the colleage examination in 2005. She was also awraded the victorian women dentist prize for outstanding female at the Australian Dental Council Exam.
    Dr Taha has a long standing interest in clinical research on preserving pulp vitality and regenerative endodontics, She is currently running several trials on the topic for which short to medium term results have been already published. She lectured on vital pulp therapy in national and international conferences and coauthored a book chapter on the topic. She serves as an editorial board member in the International Endodontic Journal, BMC oral health and Saudi Endodontic Journal.

    Ye Shi, DDS, MS

    Dr. Ye Shi is currently the Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Periodontics and Implantology at NYU College of Dentistry and Program Director for the International Summer Practicum Program.

    Dr. Ye Shi received her DDS degree from Nanjing Medical University in China, 2011 and then completed a 3-year post-graduate residency with a master’s degree of Prosthodontics in Pecking Union Medical College, China. Afterward, she came to United States for further training. She first completed a three-year Advanced Program for International Dentists in Implant Dentistry at NYU College of Dentistry. Thereupon, she had her 3-year periodontal training in the Advanced Education Program of Periodontics at NYU College of Dentistry. Dr. Shi is a diplomate of American Board of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, as well as a diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

    She serves as Chair of Membership Committee of Northeastern Society of Periodontists and Vice Chair of Clinical Innovation Committee of Academy of Osseointegration. She has received numerous awards for her clinical research and published articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters as well. In addition to lecturing nationally and internationally, Dr. Shi lectures for the Advanced Program for Periodontics and International Implant Program.

He is a Clinical Professor and the Director of Oral Medicine in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology & Medicine at New York University College of Dentistry, and the recipient of NYU’s distinguished teaching award. He is a past president of the American Academy of Oral Medicine, secretary of the American Board of Oral Medicine, and steering committee member of the World Workshop on Oral Medicine.     Dr. Arthi Kumar is a board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist who completed her training at New York Presbyterian Queens.     Bekir Karabucak, D.M.D., M.S.

    Dr. Karabucak is Associate Professor/Clinician Educator, Interim Chair and Director of post-graduate program in the Department of Endodontics. Dr. Karabucak serves as director of Advanced Dental Education in the School of Dental Medicine. After earning his dental degree from Istanbul University School of Dental Medicine in 1993, Dr. Karabucak completed his endodontic postgraduate training at the Department of Endodontics at Penn, where he also received his Masters in Oral Biology in 1998. He later earned his DMD degree from Penn Dental Medicine in 2002. He’s the attending endodontist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia since 2005. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. He lectured at national and international conferences and also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Endodontics.

    Hal F. Duncan, B.D.S., M.C.D, PhD

    Received his dental degree from the University of Glasgow and his 4-year endodontic speciality training in Guy’s Hospital, King’s College London. For ten years, he worked part-time in specialist referral endodontic practice. He completed his PhD in the University of Birmingham in pulp biology. As an Academic Professor and Consultant in Endodontics, he has led endodontic teaching, service delivery and research in Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) for the last 15 years. He has published over 120 international peer-reviewed scientific articles, 40 research abstracts, 18 book chapters as well as editing 3 textbooks. He was the primary author of the recent European Society of Endodontology (ESE) position statement on ‘Management of deep caries and the exposed pulp’ and is the lead of the ongoing ‘ESE S3-level Guidelines for the Treatment of Endodontic Disease’. He is the current Editor-in-Chief of the International Endodontic Journal after being an Associate Editor for the International Endodontic Journal since 2014. Hal has completed three sponsored research fellowships in New York University/Rutgers University investigating the role of epigenetic-modifying agents on tooth regeneration. In DDUH, he currently maintains a research lab and is the principal supervisor of clinical and scientifically trained PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in basic and translational pulp biology and endodontics. Currently, he is the Director of Research in the DDUH, the Chair of Membership Committee of the ESE, a Member of the Executive Board of the ESE, the President Elect of the ESE, the President of the Irish Division of the IADR, the Vice-President of the Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group of the IADR and a Board Member of the Pan European Region of the IADR.

    Brooke Blicher, DMD, Certificate in Endodontics

    Dr. Brooke Blicher received her BA in Chemistry from Colgate University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, her DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine where she graduated with honors in research, and her certificate in Endodontics from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

    Dr. Blicher is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, and a Fellow in both the American College of Dentistry and the International College of Dentistry.  She continues to be involved with teaching, research and mentorship, holding faculty appointments at both Harvard and Tufts Schools of Dental Medicine. Dr. Blicher has been involved in organized dentistry as a member of several committees for the American Association of Endodontists, and her local and state dental societies. 

    While providing state of the art specialty care in her private practice in White River Junction, Vermont, Dr. Blicher continues to pursue her academic interests.  She authored the chapter “Diagnosis and Treatment Planning” in the 6th edition of Endodontics: Principles and Practice, as well as the textbooks  Endodontics: A Review, now in its second edition, and the newly published Clinical Endodontics, available in March.  She has published extensively, including in the Journal of Dental Research, General Dentistry, Inside Dentistry, and Compendium. Dr. Blicher has lectured both locally and internationally on endodontic diagnosis, non-odontogenic pain, fractures, trauma, resorption, treatment of immature teeth, and CBCTs in endodontics as well as on ideal restorative care following endodontic treatment.

    Stephane Simon, DDS, MSc, PhD, HDR

    Stéphane SIMON has been qualified as Doctor in Dental Surgery in 1994 at the University of Reims. He got a certificate in Biomaterials in 1998 (University of Paris 7) and in Endodontology in 2000 (Paris 7). He taught Endodontics from 2001 to 2005 at the University of Paris 7 as Assistant Professor, and from 2006 to 2008 at the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) as a Clinical lecturer. He has got a Master Degree (MPhil) in Molecular and cell Biology in 2005 (Paris 7), and completed in 2009 his PhD in Pulp Biology in the frame of a co-supervised Thesis between the University of Paris 7 and the University of Birmingham. He was the President of the Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group of the IADR and is still a member of the education committee of the European Society of Endodontology.
    From 2012 up to august 2019, he was a full time academic teacher/researcher, awarded as Professor in Endodontics at the Paris Diderot University and was the director of the Postgraduate Endodontic Program at Paris Diderot University (3 years full time program).
    He is the author of 8 Endodontic books, authored 8 chapters in clinical books, and three chapters in Tissue engineering books. He has also published 47 papers in per-reviewed scientific journals (Endodontics and Science) and more than 95 papers in clinical per-reviewed journals ; he is also one of the editor of Visualendodontics software.
    In 2011, he received the Hans Genett Award from the European Society of Endodontology.
    He has a private practice limited to endodontics for 20 years, and is the founder and scientific director of a postgraduate course company named Endo Académie.

    Dr. Fouad obtained his DDS, Certificate of Endodontics and MS at the University of Iowa.

    He served on the faculty and in various administrative roles at University of Connecticut Health Center, the University of Maryland, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.     Dr. Fouad has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 24 textbook chapters, and 140 abstracts. He edited and co-authored the textbooks: Endodontic Microbiology, as well as the fifth and sixth editions of Endodontics: Principles and Practice. He is a Diplomate and Past President of the American Board of Endodontics, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Endodontics and Dental Traumatology. He received the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group of the International Association of Dental Research.

    Nessrin A. Taha, BDS, GradDipClinDent, DClinDent, PhD

    Dr Taha is professor of Endodontics, former Vice Dean and director of postgraduate clinics at Faculty of Dentistry, Jordan University of Science and Technology. She also Seves as chairman of the scientific and examination committee for Jordan Dental Board Examination in endodontics, and a memer of the ethics committee and institutional review board at king Abdullah University Hospital.
    Dr Taha obtained her speciality in Endodontics and PhD from the University of Melbourne in Australia. She is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of dental Surgeons in both the general stream and the special fields of Endodontics and has been awarded Sutherland Prize for outstanding performance in the colleage examination in 2005. She was also awraded the victorian women dentist prize for outstanding female at the Australian Dental Council Exam.
    Dr Taha has a long standing interest in clinical research on preserving pulp vitality and regenerative endodontics, She is currently running several trials on the topic for which short to medium term results have been already published. She lectured on vital pulp therapy in national and international conferences and coauthored a book chapter on the topic. She serves as an editorial board member in the International Endodontic Journal, BMC oral health and Saudi Endodontic Journal.

    Domenico Ricucci, M.D., D.D.S.

    Dr. Domenico Ricucci received his degree in General Medicine from “La Sapienza” University of Rome in 1982, and his DDS from the same University in 1985. Since then on he has maintained private dental practices limited to endodontics. He achieved the National Scientific qualification as full professor in the Italian higher education system in 2018. Dr. Ricucci’s primary research interest relates to pulpal and periapical tissue reactions to caries and treatment procedures, biofilms in endodontic infections, etiology of RTC treatment failure, pulp regeneration/revascularization. Since 1998 he has run his own histology laboratory and has developed considerable skills in hard tissue preparations for light microscopy.

    Dr Ricucci has published 113 papers and has lectured both nationally and internationally. He has authored the Textbook and Atlas “Patologia e Clinica Endodontica”, the textbook and atlas “Endodontology. An integrated biological and clinical view”, also translated into Chinese, Russian, Japanese. He has also authored or co-authored 22 book chapters. He is recipient of the Louis I. Grossman International Award by the French Society of Endodontics in 2017, and the Louis I. Grossman Award by the American Association of Endodontists in 2023.

Mechanical instrumentation and irrigation play a key role in the removal of pulp tissue, contaminants, debris, and microorganisms from the root canal system. Different adjunctive agitation techniques have been developed to help irrigating solutions penetrate the complexities of the root canal system. Passive ultrasonic irrigation, apical negative pressure irrigation systems, sonic activation, multisonic agitation, and laser activation have been reported to be superior to conventional positive pressure needle irrigation in regards to smear layer removal, antimicrobial effect, and decreased post-operative pain. Minimally invasive canal preparation has been promoted with the activated irrigation approaches. However, what is not known is the effect of minimally invasive instrumentation, in conjunction with an activated irrigation approach on clinical outcomes (retention/longevity, healing of apical periodontitis). Can infected root canals be predictably disinfected following conservative root canal preparation? Based on a review of the current literature and personal clinical experience, appropriate preparation sizes for root canal treatment will be explored.

    Dr. Qian Xie received her BDS and PhD degrees from Sichuan University, Chengdu, China. After a few years of practice, Dr. Xie returned to graduate school at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, where she received her Certificate of Specialty in Endodontics. Dr. Xie is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. Dr. Xie has been a member and an active participant in the American Association of Endodontists, the American Dental Association, the Chicago Dental Society, and the Edgar D. Coolidge Endodontic Study Club. She is a fellow of the International College of Dentists. Dr. Xie has a broad background in oral science and clinical dentistry, with specific training and expertise in oral microbiology research and clinic experience in endodontics. Her research background includes caries research, oral biofilm and endodontic irrigation.

    David Donnermeyer, PD Dr.med.dent.

    Dr. Donnermeyer is board-certified specialist for Endodontology of the German Association of Endodontology and Dental Traumatology (DGET) and certified member of the European Society of Endodontology (ESE). He currently serves as assistant professor in the Department of Periodontology and Operative Dentistry, University Hospital Münster, Germany, with the perspective of relocating to the Department of Restorative, Preventive and Pediatric Dentistry, University of Bern, Switzerland. Dr. Donnermeyer graduated and obtained his PhD at University of Münster, Germany, before focussing his research on various fields of endodontology including root canal obturation and irrigation. Dr. Donnemeyer published 35 peer-reviewed manuscripts.

    Patricia Claire Dust, Cand.med.dent

    Patricia Dust is a student and PhD candidate in the medical faculty at the University of Münster in Germany. Her research focuses on different irrigation techniques in simulated roots canals. 

    Edgar Schäfer, Prof.Dr.med.dent.

    Dr. Schäfer obtained his PhD at the University of Münster Germany. He is head of the Central Interdisciplinary Ambulance in the School of Dentistry, University of Münster, Germany.

    Dr. Schäfer has published more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts, more than 50 textbook chapters and edited 5 textbooks. He is a certified specialist for Endodontology of the German Association of Endodontology and dental Traumatology (DGET), an active and certified member of the European Society of Endodontology (ESE) and an associate member of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE). From 2014 – 2016 Dr. Schäfer was President of the German Association of Operative Dentistry (DGZ) and since 2023 he is President of the German Association of Endodontology and dental Traumatology (DGET). He received more than 30 national and international academic awards.

    Sebastian Bürklein, Prof.Dr.med.dent.

    He graduated in 2003. From 2003–2006 he worked as a dentist in the Department of Operative Dentistry, University of Münster, Germany. In 2005, he completed his doctorate in dentistry. From 2006–2010 he made his graduation as a specialist in oral surgery in the Dental Clinic of Bochum, Germany (Head: Prof. Dr. H.-P. Jöhren). In 2009, he became a certified specialist in endodontology (German Society of Endodontology and Dental Traumatology) and in 2010, he appointed Specialist in Oral Surgery. Since 2011 he is deputy head of the Central Interdisciplinary Outpatient Clinic in the School of Dentistry (Head: Prof. Dr. E. Schäfer), University of Münster, Germany. In 2015, he became an adjunct professor. He also held various positions in different national scientific societies. From 2014-2020 he was member of the Board of the German Society of Restorative Dentistry (DGZ). Since 2021, he is member of the Board of the German Society of Endodontology and Dental Traumatology (DGET). He had over 20 years of academic and research experience and published numerous scientific papers in world-leading peer-reviewed endodontic journals. Additionally, he had book contributions in national and international reference books and lectures at national and international congresses in the field of endodontics. Since 2022, he is associate editor of the International Endodontic Journal.
